Sun Salt Chlorine Damage

You Say:

My strands have had too much sun, salt and chlorine!

Folica Fix

Spending time in the sun is fun, but it can wreak havoc on your hair if you don't take precautions. It's as important to protect your precious strands from the sun, salt and chlorine as it is to slather on sunscreen.

Prevention

Color-treated hair in particular needs to be protected from the sun, which is a natural bleaching agent. LA stylist Julie Rosenberg, Owner of Gamine Silver Lake, often sees clients with over-beached strands. She recommends coating hair with a leave-in conditioner before you swim in the pool or ocean or spend lots of time in the sun. Look for a conditioner that comes with an SPF or you can mix a little sunscreen directly into your leave-in (just remember to mix well).

There is an array of sun protection products such as Sedu Color Protection Boost designed to safeguard strands against damaging UVA/UVB rays. Most offer other beauty benefits like prevention from sun and salt damage, while infusing hair with moisture, nutrients, and a surge of shine.

When you're swimming in a pool, a bathing cap is a helpful way to protect hair from chlorine damage. So if you're logging lots of laps in the pool, keep hair under wraps to protect your shine and color. If a bathing cap's not for you, try products specifically designed to fight chlorine damage, like Malibu 2000 Swimmers' Action Shampoo and L'ANZA Swim and Sun Daily Chelating Shampoo.

Treatment

If your hair is already in despair with visible white ends, loss of elasticity and dry texture, you need a reparative treatment to rebuild hair strength and restore softness and shine. Hair stylist extraordinaire Oscar Blandi says nothing is better to repair hair than Italy's healing fango mud composed of volcanic ash, used to soothe and heal. It's the key ingredient in his Trattamento al Fango Marine Mud Treatment, Oscar's not the only one with a soothing solution, though; check out these other great hair treatment products.

In addition nourishing masks, it's a bright idea to care for hair with products designed to combat the damaging effects of sun, salt and chlorine such as Barex Sun Essential Conditioner or Barex Sun Essentials. They will heal hair and provide essential nourishment, easing detangling, and restoring luscious softness.
