“First day” color is glorious. Roots haven’t surfaced, color looks radiant, and hair reflects a spectrum of shimmering tones. And, in as little as a week, you might start to notice those once vibrant strands start to fade. There are several things you can do to preserve your precious color and conceal those inevitable roots and pesky grays in the process.
Preserve & Protect
Color Safe Care
To start with, make sure wait at least twenty-four hours to wash your hair (forty-eight is ideal) to give your tresses time to completely absorb the color. The longer you wait the less chance you have of washing away color.
Wash out is the worst. You might not always notice, but water and harsh shampoos can literally wash your hair color down the drain. Water swells the hair shaft, releasing color molecules. So, if you have color-treated hair (highlights count!), wash hair just a few times a week (2-3 if possible), and use a shampoo and conditioner created for color-treated hair. Try DevaCurl No-Poo Cleanser or L’ANZA Healing Color Care-Preserving Shampoo. These products are formulated with color-friendly ingredients and technologies that help preserve tinted tresses.
Color Locking Sprays
Color preserving sprays are designed to shield hair from color fade out caused by styling and daily wear and tear. These color-coddling sprays deliver ingredients including UV filters, health-boosting vitamins and moisturizers, heat protectors and shine intensifiers to lock in color and prolong vibrancy. Many styling products also deliver color protection such as BioSilk Silk Therapy and Keratin Complex Shine.
Color Depositing Shampoos & Conditioners
Color enhancing shampoos and conditioners brighten up fading hair with a burst of washable color. This is a quick and easy technique to liven up color and camouflage grays right in the shower. These color-fast products aren’t a worry to your wardrobe, but we recommend using a dark towel after washing.
You can fight color fading with “to dye for” products that add a dose of temporary color directly to strands. Color glosses and glazes are the latest salon treatment that’s now available at home. These products brighten faded color and highlights, restore silky texture, and illuminate lackluster locks with results that last until your next shampoo. Keep color fresh with John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze or Carol’s Daughter Tui Color Care Hydrating Hair Mask; both come in a variety of shades for a perfect match.
Healthy hair grows an average of 1/2 inch per month, making it practically impossible to avoid sprouting roots. Hair guru Rita Hazan developed the Root Concealer to help conceal roots and grays in between color appointments. It washes out easily but the hue stays in place even if you get caught in the rain or work up a sweat at the gym. Or, try out a colored powder to blend with your roots between washings; we love DermMatch.
Heat Up Color
Heat styling hair with a professional flat iron or hair dryer can help seal in color and moisture so hair looks luminous longer. The fabulous technologies including ceramic, ionic, tourmaline and infra-red, found in professional styling tools can protect hair and maintain moisture to prolong color and preserve hair health. Try a product such as Sedu Moisturizing Thermal Primer Spray before heat styling to fuse color-locking ingredients deep into hair.
