Create Georgeous Waves

Flat irons aren't just for straightening; they're versatile tools for creating all kinds of styles.

Create Waves with Your Flat Iron

Gorgeous Waves

In four easy steps, get flowing waves that you can either style to be polished and shiny or textured and beachy. All you need is a flat iron and some finesse.

Bohemian Waves How-To Video

Step 1: Using a 1 inch flat iron, separate the hair into small sections (no bigger than the width of the iron) and brush hair smooth.

Step 2: Run the iron over the hair quickly once or twice, pressing very lightly. You don't want to straighten the hair yet, but heating it up will help the style set better. waves Step 2

  • Step 3: Starting at the roots, wrap hair around the top end of the iron, toward you. Turn the iron 180 degrees. Then, while pressing lightly and clapping the iron to allow movement, run the iron up and down the section for about 5 seconds. waves Step 3
  • Step 4: Remove the iron and cup the curled section in your hand to let it cool for a few seconds. Then, twist the strand around your fingers to help set the wave. When finished run your fingers through the waves to separate. waves Step 4 waves Step 4

Or, Style with a 2" Barrel Curling Iron

A wide round curling iron delivers natural looking curls and body.

  • Spray damp hair with a volumizing heat protectant before styling.
  • Blow hair straight, maintaining volume (here's how).
  • Starting at eye level, wrap hair in sections around the curling iron, positioning the iron perpendicular to hair.
  • Hold the curl around the curling iron for ten seconds.
  • Spray each section with a light mist of hairspray to hold. Try CHI Infra Texture Dual Action Hair Spray.

Styling Tip: For smaller, tighter curls, try a small barrel curling iron.

Get Loose Waves with Rollers

Hair rollers make styling easy, with soft, voluminous results.

  • Towel dry hair and apply a volumizing spray to the roots of damp hair.
  • Roll hair in Velcro rollers, rolling straight up to chin level.
  • Let hair air dry or blow dry with a diffuser. (If you're going to blow dry, remember your heat protectant!
  • Gently remove the rollers, and set waves with a light hairspray.
  • Shake out and separate sections with your fingers if waves aren't loose enough.

Styling Tip: For extra sheen, mist damp hair with shine spray before removing rollers.

If You're Already Naturally Curly

Our pal Ryan Cunningham, who styled at Bumble and bumble and Rita Hazan Salon in NYC gave us this quick recipe for creating casual beachy waves for the naturally curly.

Styling Tip: If your curls require a little bit more control, try using some lightweight mousse after priming.
