Buying Guide: Find The Right Travel Appliance
Traveling can do a number on one's hair routine and ultimate hair health. Between switching shampoos to whatever travel sizes you have on hand, to using the complimentary dryer at the hotel, your hair can end up looking a mess!
To avoid such hair woes, you can easily purchase your own high quality travel tools to take with you on the go. But how does all that voltage stuff work anyways? This handy guide will help you find the perfect flat iron, curling iron, or hair dryer to suit your travel needs!
There are 3 factors you need to consider when traveling:
Voltage
- Is your hair dryer/flat iron single voltage? Dual voltage? Universal voltage?
- What are the voltage requirements of where you are traveling? If it is outside the continental U.S., you will most likely need an appliance that offers dual voltage.
Plug Type
- What plug type does your hair dryer/flat iron have? Most likely if you are purchasing in the U.S., your plug will be Type B.
- What type of plug is required to use your appliance in the country you are traveling?
Size
- Do you need a small item to easily fit in your carry-on bag? If so, there are a variety of mini hair dryers, mini flat irons, and travel curling tools to suit your needs!
Voltage
Depending on what country you are traveling to, the national standards for voltage can be anywhere from 110 volts up to 240 volts. Most of North America runs on 120 volts which means you can use any appliance with 110/120 volts through North America and Canada.
Many other countries run anywhere from 220 volts to 240 volts. If you are purchasing a dual/universal voltage appliance, then you can use this product anywhere throughout the world with only a plug adapter. If the appliance is not dual voltage, then you can use a converter, however this is not recommended and can both void the warranty and break your hair dryer/flat iron.

Plug Type
Most of the appliances you see here on Folica as well as through stores feature plug type B which fits in any plug you find throughout North America. But the majority of the world runs on different plug types. You will need to purchase an adapter to utilize your appliance in a different country, or can use the below (please check with your hotel on the exact plug as some countries utilize multiple plug types):
